Welcome to “The Change Makers” – our weekly video series.
In this series our Change Makers share their stories, their thoughts, their ambitions and their actions to leave the earth a better place – to be a Good Ancestor to future generations.
Our planet is experiencing catastrophic environmental harm and it requires us to Think Long Term, beyond our lifetimes, to evaluate our choices and to take actions to ensure a sustainable and healthy future for all.
The stories of those leading the change – The Change Makers – those thinking and acting with long-term vision, are inspirational.
Inspired, we can ask ourselves, “what can we do to be Better Ancestors?”
This week, Better Ancestors checks in with Forest & Bird’s annual campaign to give a voice to New Zealand’s native birds (and this year, bats)
The Bird of the Year campaign has grown from a small-scale promotion to a national obsession.
Led by teams of volunteers who employ creative, and occasionally somewhat fraudulent, methods to drum up votes for their chosen bird, the ‘country’s most anticipated election’ is fun and engaging, and also draws attention to the serious plight of many of our most-loved birds and bats.
“Birds disperse seed, they pollinate our native trees, they recycle nutrients and because humans are interconnected with nature they’re part of our extended family,” says Forest & Bird’s Lissy Fehnker-Heather.
“It’s really important that lots of people are fighting for nature.”
