Kia ora!
Welcome to Better Ancestors, and our weekly video series throughout 2021. In our series change makers share their stories, their thoughts, their ambitions and their actions to leave the earth a better place – to be a good ancestor to future generations. Our planet is experiencing catastrophic environmental harm; it requires us to think Long Term, beyond our lifetimes, and to take action to ensure a sustainable and healthy future for all. The stories of those leading the change – the Change Makers – those thinking and acting with long term vision, are inspirational. Inspired, we can ask ourselves, “what can we do to be Better Ancestors?”
In Episode 5, Better Ancestors explores the amazing work of The NZ Native Forest Restoration Trust, the largest native forest owner and manager in Aotearoa New Zealand. For 40 years, Geoff Davidson has served as a trustee, during which time the Trust has acquired and facilitated the regeneration process on 8,000 hectares of marginal and degraded land. Much of this land had previously been used as monoculture pasture land, and was damaged from decades of use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. As this land is allowed to heal, the native forests will also serve as long carbon sinks and helping to reverse the decline in biodiversity and harm to our fresh water ecosystems. This month, the New Zealand Climate Commission has called for the establishment of 300,000 hectares of NEW New Zealand Native Forest by 2035 in order to help meet New Zealand’s obligations. This can’t be done without the work of NZNFRT and similar organisations. They need our support.
