Welcome to “The Change Makers” – our weekly video series.
In this series our Change Makers share their stories, their thoughts, their ambitions and their actions to leave the earth a better place – to be a Good Ancestor to future generations.
Our planet is experiencing catastrophic environmental harm and it requires us to Think Long Term, beyond our lifetimes, to evaluate our choices and to take actions to ensure a sustainable and healthy future for all.
The stories of those leading the change – The Change Makers – those thinking and acting with long-term vision, are inspirational.
Inspired, we can ask ourselves, “what can we do to be Better Ancestors?”
This week, Better Ancestors visits with Brendan Linnane, Foggy Dew Funghi, Placer County California.
Brendan began the journey that is Foggy Dew Funghi with a chance reading of “Mycellium Running” written by Paul Stamets.
Paul, in his book, speaks of the importance of funghi as “the grand recyclers of our planet - as the interface organisms between life and death and life again.
Funghi are all members of the group of eukaryotic organisms that includes microorganisms such as yeasts and moulds, as well as the more familiar mushrooms. They don’t photosynthesize and growth is their form of mobility, except for spores, some of which may self-travel through the air or water.
Inspired by Paul Stamet’s writing and his experience with Foggy Dew Funghi, Brendan appreciates funghi as our teachers, “we can learn from them in so many ways”.
In intact nature, all living creatures are connected, but most connections are invisible to us unless we learn to perceive things in new ways.
Perhaps by slowing down, by taking time to sit quietly, to look and to listen carefully we can learn from the natural world - our teacher.
