Kia ora!
Welcome to Better Ancestors, and our weekly video series throughout 2021. In our series change makers share their stories, their thoughts, their ambitions and their actions to leave the earth a better place – to be a good ancestor to future generations. Our planet is experiencing catastrophic environmental harm; it requires us to think Long Term, beyond our lifetimes, and to take action to ensure a sustainable and healthy future for all. The stories of those leading the change – the Change Makers – those thinking and acting with long term vision, are inspirational. Inspired, we can ask ourselves, “what can we do to be Better Ancestors?”
In Episode 1, Better Ancestors travels to Banks Peninsula to meet Hugh Wilson, the kaitiaki (manager) of Hinewai Reserve. For 30 years, Hugh has overseen the regeneration of native flora and fauna at Hinewai - the transformation of the landscape from damaged farmland to regenerating forest. This episode explores the importance of biodiversity and carbon sequestration, and shows how the work Hugh and the Hinewai team have accomplished provides a blueprint to guide others to become involved. In this episode we also meet Warren Begley, who is learning from the groundwork Hugh provides to help take the first steps towards forest regeneration on several other places throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.
