Welcome to “The Change Makers” – our weekly video series.
In this series our Change Makers share their stories, their thoughts, their ambitions and their actions to leave our world a better place – to be a Good Ancestor to future generations.
Our planet is experiencing catastrophic environmental harm and it requires us to Think Long Term, beyond our lifetimes, to evaluate our choices and to take actions to ensure a sustainable and healthy future for all.
The stories of those leading the change – The Change Makers – those thinking and acting with long term vision, are inspirational. Inspired, we can ask ourselves, “what can we do to be Better Ancestors?”
This week, Better Ancestors visits Project Jonah, the New Zealand charity that empowers local people to help at whale and dolphin standings - to provide aid to these majestic animals when they need us.
Aotearoa / New Zealand has one of the world’s highest rates of whale standings - the beaching of sometimes hundreds of whales at one time.
During mass strandings, it is the highly skilled volunteer medics, trained by Project Jonah, who offer the best care possible.
By directing the public on how to help and maintain personal safety, these volunteers are able to keep stranded whales from over heating and eventually return them to the water if possible.
The root cause of strandings is often caused by us, Homo Sapiens.
Through the disruption of migratory routes by shipping, habitat threat from commercial fishing, pollution of ocean ecosystems and changes to water chemistry whales face multiple severe obstacles to their survival.
If we truly wish to help the whales, who are an integral part of countless ecosystems, we need to seek preventative solutions. Project Jonah runs entirely off of donations, and any support you can offer will be used immediately.
