Welcome to “The Change Makers” – our weekly video series.
In this series our Change Makers share their stories, their thoughts, their ambitions and their actions to leave the earth a better place – to be a Good Ancestor to future generations.
Our planet is experiencing catastrophic environmental harm and it requires us to Think Long Term, beyond our lifetimes, to evaluate our choices and to take actions to ensure a sustainable and healthy future for all.
The stories of those leading the change – The Change Makers – those thinking and acting with long-term vision, are inspirational.
Inspired, we can ask ourselves, “what can we do to be Better Ancestors?”
This week, Better Ancestors visits with Jeff McCauley, and his Native Plants Nursery in Piha on the West Coast of the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand.
New Zealand is unique in so many ways, not the least being that the plants and animals that are native to Aotearoa have evolved, isolated from large land masses for aeons.
The result is our land has some of the highest numbers of endemic species on earth.
Unfortunately, the sometimes accidental and sometime deliberate introduction of tens of thousands of exotic plants and animals has pushed many of Aotearoa’s unique species to the precipice of extinction.
The rolling green farmland and even our forest or tussock landscapes are not as they seem. This is not the clean, green, pure New Zealand of picture-postcard-myths. This is our land, Aotearoa, where so many of our endemic species desperately need our immediate help.
With the wide spread destruction of ecosystems, the ecological requirements for endemic species often no longer exists. To prevent extinction, we have one last chance to intervene. This is the space in which people like Jeff help. By nurturing and propagating at risk species and making nursery plants available to restoration projects he is able to help turn things around.
Jeff describes the dawn of awareness of our taonga species as like entering into the fifth dimension.
As we see we begin to understand and with understanding comes support …
