Welcome to “The Change Makers” – our weekly video series.
In this series our Change Makers share their stories, their thoughts, their ambitions and their actions to leave the earth a better place – to be a Good Ancestor to future generations.
Our planet is experiencing catastrophic environmental harm and it requires us to Think Long Term, beyond our lifetimes, to evaluate our choices and to take actions to ensure a sustainable and healthy future for all.
The stories of those leading the change – The Change Makers – those thinking and acting with long-term vision, are inspirational.
With the world’s attention turning towards our species relationship with earth’s systems, be it climate heating or ecological crisis, Better Ancestors is turning our lens to the impact of agriculture in Aotearoa New Zealand.
In three episodes we visit with concerned people – people highlighting the impact of the industrial agriculture / fossil fuel nexus upon our environment and what we can do about it.
Our 3 part series within a series, we have titled “The Ugly, The Bad & The Good”. We begin with this Episode 29, The UGLY Synthetic Nitrogen Fertilizer & Human Health.
For decades scientists have known that increasing nitrates in fresh water has a profound impact upon the ecology of fresh water systems. The direct impact on the health of human beings is very complex though known to increase the risk of grave illness.
Despite this, and despite our apparent connection with our natural world and our clinging on to an image of a clean pure NZ we embarked upon a multi-generational experiment. We spread millions of tonnes of synthetic nitrogenous fertiliser across our lands.
Now the evidence of the harm is upon us. With undeniable proof it is time to act. Will our governing structures and associated institutions be up to the task, or will the problem be perpetuated into the future – the cost past on to generations to come.
Truly a Better Ancestors moment – can we think and act Long-Term?
